How Push-On Fittings Work for Plumbing and Irrigation

At some point, your plumbing or irrigation system will inevitably need repairs. Rather than taking the time to completely drain the system, use push-on fittings. Push-in fittings are quick and easy-to-use fittings that don’t require adhesive to hold them in place because they use small spines to grip the pipe. The fitting is waterproofed by an O-ring seal, and push-fit fittings are the first choice for plumbing and irrigation repairs.

How Push-On Fittings Work
A push-fit fitting is one that does not require adhesives or welding. Instead, they have a ring of metal spurs inside that grab the pipe and hold the fitting in place. To install push-fit fittings, you first need to ensure that the pipe has been cut straight and that the ends are free of burrs. Then you need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how far to push the accessory. For example, if your copper pipe is ¾”, the insertion depth should be 1 1/8″.

The push-fit fittings are fitted with an O-ring inside to maintain a watertight seal. Since they do not require adhesives or welding, push-fit joints are the quickest and easiest joints.

Push-fit fittings are available in PVC and brass. PVC push-fit fittings such as these can be used to join PVC pipes together, while brass push-fit fittings can be used to join copper, CPVC and PEX pipes. You can also find push-fit versions of most standard fittings, including tees, elbows, couplings, flexible couplings and end caps.

Can you reuse push-fit fittings?
Some types of push-fit fittings can be reused; however, PVC push-fit fittings are permanent. Once they are in place, you will have to cut them off. Brass fittings, on the other hand, are removable and can be reused. You will need to purchase a brass push-fit accessory removal clip to remove accessories. There is a lip on the accessory that you can slide the clip over and push to release the accessory.

Whether or not the accessories are reusable also depends on the brand. At PVCFittingsOnline we stock reusable Tectite brass fittings. It is recommended to check and make sure that the accessory is not damaged before reusing it.

Can you use PVC push fittings on your irrigation system?
Push-on accessories are a great option when your irrigation system needs servicing, and you can use them for almost any irrigation application. Not only are they easy to use, they don’t require system drying to install. This means you don’t have to worry about draining your irrigation system. All you need to do is make sure the water supply is turned off and clean the area where the fittings are attached. Additionally, the O-rings on the inside provide a watertight seal, and they have the same pressure rating as their counterparts. PVC is rated to 140psi and brass fittings are rated to 200psi.

Benefits of Push Fittings
Convenience is the biggest benefit of push-fit fittings. Other fittings require adhesive or soldering and require the system to dry completely before installation, rendering your system unusable for extended periods of time. Internal spurs to grip the pipe, O-rings seal any openings, push-fit fittings require no adhesives, keep plumbing systems waterproof, and are a new must-have for plumbing and irrigation.
